Is your kid not playing outside but just sitting in the room and watching TV or playing video games etc? A multi-factorial condition that affects many children these days is childhood obesity. It is one of the rapidly growing health issues in kids across the world. Bitter truth is that childhood obesity would not only affect the physical health of the kids but their mental health also. It must be noted that the overall quality life of the kids would come down due to this problem. The kids who are obese are at huge risk of developing issues like type 2 diabetes, high BP, heart diseases etc. There are several reasons for childhood obesity like Consuming high calorie diet: The kids could consume an excess amount of calories if they eat processed foods, high sugary foods, less amounts of fruits and vegetables etc. This could lead to childhood obesity in them. It is true that obesity during childhood could lead to further lifelong health complications in them. So, please be careful. Lack of exercises etc: It is believed that a sedentary lifestyle along with excess screen time like watching TV, playing video games etc could contribute to obesity in the kids. Fact is that insufficient physical activity can be a direct cause for weight gain in the kids. Gene based: When the parents are obese, then they could pass on their genes to those kids also. Both environmental as well as lifestyle factors also play a huge role in making a child obese. Environmental factors: It is worth noting that the environment where the kid grows could also result in childhood obesity in them. Examples are availability of unhealthy food options, absence of safe places for doing exercises. Poor eating habits are influenced by easy access to fast foods and presence of sugary snacks etc at homes. Psychological factors: The child can become obese due to factors like stress, anxiety, and emotional eating. These could be due to family based, social and school based pressures etc. Parents please take care of your kids. Socioeconomic factors: Higher rates of obesity could be witnessed in those families that have lower incomes and limited access toto healthy food options and opportunity for physical activity etc. How to lower the chances of childhood obesity? By providing balanced meals: Nutrient rich foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains etc must be provided by both schools and parents etc. Eating home prepared food must be given importance and by this the kids would get the taste of home cooked foods. The home cooked food would provide the much needed nutrients for the growing kids. By limiting sugary and processed foods etc: The kids could avoid eating calorie rich foods like sugary snacks, beverages etc by reducing the availability. By this, unnecessary weight gain could be avoided by the kids. By having portion control: Over eating by the kids can be avoided by teaching the kids about the portion sizes. This would help the kids to avoid getting obese.

New Traffic Regulations in Tiruvannamalai to Decongest Temple Town from February 1!
To address increasing traffic congestion in Tiruvannamalai, particularly around the Arunachaleswara Temple, new traffic regulations will come into effect on February 1. A consultative meeting involving key stakeholders was held to finalize the new rules aimed at easing congestion in the town. Officials emphasized strict enforcement of these changes, especially for tourist vehicles and auto-rickshaws. Under the new rules, four-wheelers will not be allowed on the four Mada streets surrounding the temple. Goods-laden lorries carrying essential items can access these streets only between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., while special passes will be issued to residents for two-wheeler access. Public transport will also follow revised routes. Buses heading to certain outskirts will take alternate roads to avoid bottlenecks in the central areas. Similarly, private buses and tourist vehicles from neighboring towns and cities will be required to park in designated lots on the outskirts, each capable of accommodating 300-500 vehicles. Specific operational routes have been assigned for auto-rickshaws, and commercial establishments must arrange parking within their premises. Parking in public spaces will incur fines. On average, the town sees three lakh visitors daily, with numbers doubling during weekends and holidays. Alongside temple visits, tourists also participate in the 14 km girivalam walk, contributing to the congestion.

Giving powdered milk to the kids – Things to note!!
These days, a convenient option for many parents seeking alternative for fresh milk is powdered milk or dried milk. It must be noted that when water gets evaporated from the pastured milk, then we could get powdered milk. There is always some confusion among parents regarding the safety and healthy aspect of powdered milk for their kids. Point to be noted here is that when powdered milk is prepared and stored correctly then it is safe for the kids. Bacteria would get eliminated through rigorous pasteurisation and drying ensuring safety. It is noteworthy that powdered milk should never be used as a substitute for breast milk. The reason is that powdered milk would not have the essential nutrients for the newborns etc. For the child`s safety we must take into account these three factors like following instructions while preparing, checking for allergies and storing it properly. Health benefits of powdered milk for kids: Powdered milk is rich in calcium and this would help in strong bones and teeth for kids. Powdered milk is a good source of proteins. While fresh milk could get wasted, powdered milk has a long shelf life. Finally, powdered milk would provide added nutrients for growing kids. Safety concerns associated with powdered milk: There is risk of contamination and storage regarding powdered milk. Bacteria like Salmonella could cause contamination of powdered milk leading to food borne illness. The young children with developing immune systems are at risk of getting food borne illness. The lack of antibodies in the powdered milk is also a huge drawback. As a result, the kids could get infections etc easily. For atleast the first year, breast milk is suggested and powdered milk must not be used without consulting a doctor. Powdered milk can be added to the diet as drink, cereals, in cooking, choosing fortified powdered milk. Drawbacks of powdered milk: Parents must select those brands that are low in added sugars and free from flavours etc. Parents must read the labels before giving powdered milk to their kids. Dietary fat is needed for brain development in the kids and for that the parents must go for whole milk powder for skimmed milk. Bitter fact is that powdered milk would not have certain heat sensitive vitamins like C etc. Added sugars would be present in some brands and they are unfit for the children. Taste of powdered milk would be different when compared to fresh milk. Avoiding powdered milk: Those babies below 12 months must not be given powdered milk as they lalack certain nutrients for the babies. Those kids who are lactose intolerant must not be given powdered milk. Point is that kids with milk allergies must not be given powdered milk to avoid allergic reactions.
